Cannabis Terpenes in Beer and Hops Terpenes in Vaporizers

Cannabis and hops are both members of the Cannabaceae family, meaning they’re both stinky. Hops contain terpenes just like marijuana, and is one of the elements that give beverages like beer its flavor and aroma. Breweries have attempted to mimic the flavor of cannabis in beer, but most don’t use actual cannabis extracts.

Lagunitas the Waldos brand have created the SuperCritical IPA using terpenes from cannabis, according to Chicago Tribune. The terpenes come from CannaCraft in California, a company that produces vape cartridges under the brand AbsoluteXtracts.

Kial Long of AbsoluteXtracts said, “These are created using a combination of dozens of terpenes that we isolate and refine during cannabis extraction, and they are what give our strains their unique flavor and sensory profiles.”

The combination selected by Lagunitas is a combination of Blue Dream and Girl Scout Cookies strains. From here, six different hops were chosen, including Zeus, Summit and Tomahawk. The hops and strains were chosen to complement and balance each other.

Lagunitas has also worked in collaboration with AbsoluteXtracts to create a vape cartridge product line derived from hop terpenes and cannabis oils.

Long said, “We really just wanted to pool our resources to see what we could create.”

Karen Hamilton of Lagunitas said, “Lots of people have had the beer, at this point, and no one has experienced any psychotropic effects (to the dismay of some!).” This is because there are no psychoactive cannabis ingredients in the beer.

The IPA has 6.8-percent alcohol by volume. It’s said that its taste is a bit grassy and has an earthy bitterness from the hops. It also has a little bit of a “sticky” finish.

The small, flagship batch, was only made in a volume of 60 barrels. What was made has already been distributed to bars in California.

Hamilton said, “There may be more SuperCritical coming in the future, and this time to other areas of the U.S.”
