Mexico’s President Delivers Marijuana Legalization Plan

Mexico Marijuana Legalization

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador delivered “Mexico’s National Development Plan” to Congress last week, which included plans to legalize recreational marijuana use.

The law is intended to fight drug-related crime in Mexico by decriminalizing marijuana, Yucatan Expat Life reported.

“In terms of narcotics, the prohibitionist strategy is already unsustainable, not only because of the violence it has generated, but also because of its poor public health results,” a Mexican report stated.

The country’s lawmakers are expected to use the summer recess (May through August) to create legislation to legalize marijuana. The Mexico Supreme Court set an October deadline to generate a regulatory plan for marijuana legalization.

Mexico legalized the medicinal use of marijuana in June 2017, against fierce opposition from the country’s violent drug cartels.
