Massachusetts to Allow Marijuana Consumption Lounges

The next phase of recreational marijuana legalization in Massachusetts is set to be marijuana consumption lounges. The state’s Cannabis Control Commission chose to wait to implement the lounges until the industry was established. The lounges will be particularly beneficial for residents and tourists who are unable to use marijuana at home or in a hotel.

Marijuana social consumption lounges have been approved, however, it could take months before any actually open, reported.

Shaleen Title, the Cannabis Control Commission commissioner, said, “At this time, cannabis use is not legal for everyone, because people in public housing and renters and others don’t have a place to legally consume.”

The pilot program is expected to offer public event licenses and primary use licenses only for marijuana use. When use would be permitted at an event, it would have to be in a designated outdoor area. Vaping would be permitted as long as the indoor space is properly ventilated.

Chairman of the Cannabis Control Commission Steve Hoffman said, “I believe it is the will of the people. I believe there is a strong desire to have this.”

A vote on draft regulations for marijuana social consumption lounges is expected to take place on May 30.
